Firstly, did you see the BBC guy interviewing the hoodie carrying a 50 inch plasma TV out of a shop window. ‘Why are you doing this?’ asked our intrepid reporter.
‘Cos I’m hungry,’ explained the track-suited youth.
Which left me scurrying for the official government website to see if TVs were included as one of your ‘5 a day’?
Secondly, in one part of London an entire street was ransacked and every shop looted. Except Waterstone’s, which sells books. That fact alone tells you everything you need to know about the root cause. Education is there but certain sections of society don’t value it!
And thirdly, I heard a politician screaming hysterically about parenting. ‘Where are the mums and dads while their kids are out looting?’ And, as if by magic, live TV cut to a battered family car. It pulled up on double yellows outside a looted supermarket. Mum, dad and two young kids jumped out, eased their way through the broken glass, filled the car with beer, fags and crisps and drove off
I’m not trying to make light of what is clearly a very dark situation but, quite frankly, if any of those scenarios had appeared on a comedy sketch show, a second series would have been commissioned. Priceless!
But, of course, this is real life and the message isn’t funny. Some parts of society are filled with a choking smog of selfishness and ignorance. It seems ‘civilisation’ (as we know it) is failing to reach some parts. This may be controversial but I don’t think we (in the UK) have any idea what genuine poverty is. Not an inkling.
Plus it’s now more evident than ever that schools are teaching children the wrong things. Guess what our courses are about? Personal responsibility, positive influence, human potential, signature strengths and making right attitudinal choices. There are no formulas to remember and no essays to write. Just simple habits to put into practice!
‘The Art of Being Brilliant’, with positive psychology at its core, should be on every syllabus in every school for every age group in the land. If you want to know more, we’re running 2 ‘Art of Being Brilliant’ workshops in the SW of England on Oct 11th and 12th. Please, please make every effort to spread the word and attend if you can. If your company won’t pay the fee we will sort you out. Just ask!
It’s gonna be a riot!
Thoughts?
